Being close to London and the Channel, Sussex is a county that has always attracted interesting visitors and residents. It is a unique county with its big skies and rolling Downs and the light cast by the sea that has attracted artists and pleasure seekers since time immemorial.
From the Prince Regent who built the Royal Pavilion in Brighton (20 minutes by train) to twentieth century artists and writers such Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury group of artists and intellectuals who frequently gathered at Charleston Farmhouse in Firle (ten minutes’ drive away). Ten minutes’ drive in the other direction, in Muddles Green, is Farley Farmhouse where the photographer, Lee Miller and her surrealist artist husband, Roland Penrose, lived and entertained guests such as Picasso and Man Ray. We are just five minutes by train (or ten minutes by car) from Glyndebourne Opera House.
