Grow Your Own
It’s that time of year again when I get excited about growing food at the bed and breakfast. But the kitchen garden is in a very sad state this year and today it is raining. Again. The skies are smoky grey, the clay underfoot is waterlogged and we are all concerned about the climate crisis now as more powerful and frequent weather events are taking their toll. Gardening and growing your own fresh food is one of the most hopeful activities you can do; and it is good for your physical and mental well-being. You are in the green gym, giving your whole body a workout whilst you mentally connect to the here and now and also envisage the future and the meals that you will be able to cook once the seeds have become plants bearing gluts of fruit and vegetables.
Here are some beans, an unusual Greek soup variety…they’re enormous. I’m hoping that they will be prolific in the kitchen garden so that I can dry them for use in the winter for protein rich casseroles and soups, and also to store the open-pollinated seeds for future sowings. Talking of beans, we always serve traditional baked beans with our full English breakfasts at Starnash Farmhouse, but every now and then, Dave will cook up a pot of his special spicy cowboy beans which go down a treat round the breakfast table if you’re feeling adventurous of a morning.
